Balvenie 12 Double Wood

Intro:

This Balvenie is aged in refill American oak casks before being finished in first fill European oak sherry casks.

It is a really complex 12 year old.

This whisky will serve 99% off the whisky drinkers. 

 

 

Nose:

On the front there is a light flower note.

Fresh fruit, fresh citrus.

It's a freh nose.

Underripe banana is in there.

Honyed sultanas and grapes make their way in.

Darker notes are in the back, some barrel, some darker sherry, oloroso, with maybe some nuts, it's a combination of nuts.

There is a strawberry jam note with tea in the back.

You can pick out the different barrels, bourbon and sherry.

I do notice there is oloroso and pedro ximenez sherry.

There is also some penutbutter in there.... I think.

 

 

Palate:

The taste is a little light in the beginning but turning creamy and full

You can tell it is a lower abv but it's not a problem, the body is good.

In the middel there is caramel, honey and vanilla sweetness form the bourbon cask.

They are backuped with the deep but yet sweet sherry. More of the jam starts to appear with the sultanas and grapes.

There are dried fruits.

I also get that tiny hint of penutbutter

There is spiciness developing and it tingles on the back of the tongue

It's cinnamon wit nutmeg, also a little hazel and wallnut.

It's really complex.

 

 

Finish/aftertaste:

It's spicy!

Some dryness, yet there is still honey sweetnes.

There also is a big juicy ripe pear... love it!

Slso, there is some light malt.

Avarage length. 

Leaving you, wanting more...

 

 

Summary:

This bottle got deeper and more complex when time went on and air got into the bottle.

If you are being putt off when you first open it, give it some time and air, it will change alot.

Even in the glass, leaving it for 20 mins does wonders in my opinion

 

In the video I taste my first glass of the Balvenie 12. That was not a good idea.

Whisky changes over time in an open bottle and most of the time the first glass is not that good.

Don't let the video confuse you. I love this whisky.

At the end of 2017 I did a blind tasting of my favorite whiskies that I reviewed that year and suprise, this won!
