Intro:
Double Black is an upgraded version of the normal Black. I am not talking about a higher abv but about more smoak, more peat, in short terms, more deliciousness!
Just a quik reminder, the normal Black Label does have an age of 10, this does not.
Price: around 25 to 30 €/$/£
Coloured - Chill Filtered
40% ABV (alcohol by volume)
Nose:
The first thing you notice on the nose is that there is a lot of complexity compaired to some single malts. There is smoke, peat, spice, fruits, woody notes, salt and maybe even some iodine.
The nose to me feels pretty balanced, I think that if someone put this onto a blind tasting table 90% would not think this is not a blend.
Taste:
The mouthfeel is not that thin but it is not that thick either, if you know what I mean.
It does have a nice oily creamy feeling to it though, pretty pleasant.
The first thing you notice is a citrus sweetnes with peat and smoke. Who would have thought right.
Then there is more citrus and malt comming up, followed with honey and a milk chocolate.
All in all, it is pretty complex! (for a blend some might say)
Completing it all is a nice woody note.
The development is pretty decent.
The whisky is not that deep in terms of complexity but all the different notes are nice and well rounded.
Finish:
The finish is on the salty side with a bit of mud with woody, honeyed malt that completes it.
That is pretty much one of the weirdest sentences I have ever said.
The aftertaste is pretty shot, a little smoke and peat with milk chocolate but falling away pretty fast.
That is the only thing where this whisky is falling short.
Water:
I don't like this with water, the mouthfeel falls short and it just falls flat in my opinion.
Summary:
To make a long story short, for the price of this whisky it is a damm good one, let me tell you that.
Is it life changing? No, is it damm pleasant for you and your wallet? Yes!
8.5/10
