This is one interesting story...
The Glendronach distillery was closed from 1996 until 2002.
This 12 year old was botteld in 2013 which would make it that this one is distilled in 2001 and that is not possible!
They used older stock from 1995 and bevore, which makes this an 18 year old scotch!
In a lot of shops you can't find this anymore, but if you are lucky, you may find it on the internet or at an auction.
I paid €40,00 for mine.
Not Coloured - Non Chill Filtered
43% ABV (alcohol by volume)
Nose:
It needs time tho, leave it a least 20 minutes bevore drinken/nosing.
Dark Chocolate with deep sherry, reminds me of cake.
Hints of cinnemon, thick nose.
There is this dusty flower note which I find in other Glendronach's.
Dark Fruits, hint of giner in the back with mabey a little nutmeg.
The nose reminds me of a thick jam/conserve.
It just climbs out off the glass and meets you right away!
Even with the PX Sherry the nose is filled with heavy fruits, mabey a little sweetness in the back from the PX
The nose is rich, full, complex and deep.
Palate:
Beautifull mouthfeel, covering everything and not harsh.
On the start there is vanilla sweetness with a little honey.
Then forms a really nice thick fruitiness filled with dark fruits and spices
Gets spicy after a while on the palet.
Dusty leather starts to appear.
There is a whole bowl filled with all different kinds of nuts.
Hazelnut, walnut, cloves etc. It's all in there.
The palate is so complex and deep that it is hard to discribe...
I have never had something that tastes like this...
Finish/Aftertaste:
After swollowing, the fruitiness and spices spread and tingel, nice!
then the fruits fade away and make room for more spices, ginger, cinnamon, nutmegg you name it.
There also is chocolate, like a thick milk chocolate pudding or chocolate paste.
Its like a poët...
Water:
Its really good with a drop of water, not alot, just 2/3 drops.
If you consider the quality and the price its amazing, I give it a solid 9.0
Summary:
I think you know what I am going to say...
It is amazing!
It's rich, full, juicy, complex, sherry heavy, oaky, nutty etc. etc.
I would not recommend this to a new whisky drinker.
There is so much going on that I think a new whisky drinker will be overwelmd.
I don't know if I am going to buy more though.
I may buy one to keep in stock to open in a couple years for when it's gone but I would not keep this in my bar as a 'daily sipper' it is just to demanding for that.
I will give this whisky a really high mark because of the whole package that you get when you buy this but the things that I said in the video are different from what you can expect when the bottle has some air in it.
Oxygen changes a whisky and with this one it happend pretty quik.
In the future I will not review whisky's that I just opend because then I don't get to experience the effect of oxidation and that plays a fital role.
10/10
