Intro:
This Glenlivet is a special one.
It is one of the only whisky's finished in ex-Cognac casks!
The name comes from Captain William Smith Grant, great-grandson of George Smith, the founder of Glenlivet.
Price: around 35/45 €/$/£
Coloured - Chill Filtered
40% ABV (alcohol by volume)
Nose:
From the beginning you notice something sweet, it reminds me of a port finished whisky but it is sweeter and meatier. It's cognac! I have had cognac a couple of times and I liked it but to find it in a whisky is really strange but really nice to!
Behind the cognac you get the typical Glenlivit character, honey and sweet but...there is more!
There is this lovely sweet apricot jame note with spice and bread.
In the back there is a little bit of cask with cinnamon.
Palate:
To me there is not a lot going on the the beginning, you have the feeling that you have whisky in your mouth but that is it. In the mid to late palate it starts to come to life though.
The mouthfeel is nice with some creamy oiliness.
There is sweetness, vanilla, honey.
I get a lovely jam note with different fruits, nice.
Finish/aftertaste:
It goes away pretty fast but before that happends the cognac makes a return with its sweetness. I also get a bit of a hay note with some raw honey.
Summary:
it is one of the only whisky's in the word that has a cognac finish and if you ask me, Glenlivet did a really good job mixing cognac and whisky notes together for a good price.
if you want to explore and experiance different whisky's, I suggest you pick this up a.s.a.p.
Because of this, it was my personal Whisky of the Year.
